Eikoh Hosoe
Born 1933, Yonezawa, Japan. Lives and works in Saitama, Japan.
Eikoh Hosoe, a tutelary figure in Japanese photography, turned away from photographic realism to produce a theatrical oeuvre inspired by the Butoh dance form created in the 1960s by Tatsumi Hijikata. Eikoh Hosoe’s masterfully poetic work was presented in 1974, in New York, as part of MoMA’s historic New Japanese Photography exhibition.
