Alinka Echeverría
Born 1981, Mexico City, Mexico. Lives and works in London, United Kingdom.
Alinka Echeverría, who holds a Masters in social anthropology and studied photography at the ICP in New York, works with both photography and video. She was the Lucie Awards’ 2012 International Photographer of the Year and won the 2011 HSBC Prize for Photography. Echeverría has an extremely introspective view of the world and looks for alternative ways of reasoning. Agreeing with Foucault, she uses photography to ‘reveal what is so near, what is so immediate, what is so closely connected to us that we do not perceive it’. In recent years, her work has shifted from documentary photography based on her training in visual and social anthropology towards a more artistic, conceptual approach.
