FESTIVAL OF COSTUME

The most beautiful costumes are out in style: each year, more than 500 participants parade down the streets of Arles.

30 June, from the Place de la République to the Théâtre Antique.


COCARDE D’OR

This prestigious bull-run is a key event of the bullfighting season.

FESTIVAL VOIES OFF

The Festival Voies Off offers an alternative look at emerging photography.

CAPTURES

Captures presents a selection of stills from the film Three of Us by Brigitte Bauer.* Making a film unspool frame by frame, going to the heart of the film, singling out these very brief moments where something particular happens while we watch and then it’s gone. Literally capturing every 25th image, extracting it, blowing it up, passing from the screen to paper, and thus proposing a fragmented and out of sync reading, beyond the temporality specific to film.

QUARTIER D’AFRIQUE

This multidisciplinary festival which theme is 'From the Mediterranean to the Cape of Good Hope' offers concerts, African dishes and a photographic exhibition, 'Views of Tunisia'.

SYMPOSIUM

The association for the former students of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie launches Symposium, a rendezvous for its members, along with photography professionals and the general public. On the programme: conferences, roundtables, forums and a festive evening at the Cargo de Nuit.

LES SUDS

The 18th edition of this huge world music festival brings Arles’ neighbourhoods alive with concerts, festivities and events! Featuring: Goran Bregovic, Rokia Traoré, Miguel Poveda...

Nuit Blanche in Arles’ Old City coproduced with 2013 Marseilles-Provence, on Saturday 13 July from 7pm to 7am.

LES ESCALES DU CARGO

Arles’ Théâtre Antique vibrates for the 9th edition of this topical music festival in which new talents share billing with internationally renowned artists. Featuring Archive on 19 July.

LEGENDS OF EQUESTRIAN ART

The world’s four greatest schools of equestrian art—the Spanish School in Vienna, Cadre Noir in Saumur, Portuguese School in Lisbon and the Royal Andalusian School in Jerez de la Frontera—have been invited to give nine gala performances in Arles’ prestigious Arènes, renovated and decorated by Christian Lacroix.

Spectacles at 10pm, on 26 and 27 July, and 9, 10, 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24 August in the Arènes.


FESTINS DE MÉDITERRANÉE

Restaurateurs providing regional specialities, local associations and growers cook for a thousand people on the Rhône’s banks. This feast, inspired by a ‘Delta cuisine’ theme, coincides with the opening of Les Rues en Musique festival.

ARELATE, JOURNÉES ROMAINES D’ARLES

The Arelate festival offers a week of various events staged in Arles’ monuments and streets and inspired by the Roman past of this city classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

EPIC MOVIE FESTIVAL

The 26th edition of the festival features the presentation of an epic film each evening at 9 pm.

FERIA DU RIZ

Rooted in Arles’ age-old bull tradition, the Feria du Riz is a celebration that takes over the streets in the heart of town.

Exhibitions in Arles

RODIN, LA LUMIÈRE DE L’ANTIQUE

Visitors will note the imprint of an omnipresent but almost invisible Antiquity in the great sculptor’s oeuvre, through 132 sculptures, assemblages and drawings by Rodin and 132 exceptional antiquities.

6 April - 1 September, Musée Départemental Arles Antique, Presqu’île du Cirque Romain.


NUAGE (CLOUD)

The exhibition is concerned with the anthropological structures of the imagination, as seen through a theme of universal resonance, blending nature and culture, art and natural sciences.

AGNÈS VERRIER

Installation of about fifty large screen-printed pieces by Agnès Verrier. The exhibition deals with the attempt of our world to organize and master the unpredictable.

THE MASTOC

A building dishevelled by Les Pas Perdus art group: Guy-André Lagesse, Nicolas Barthélemy and Jérôme Rigaut, will be exhibited as part of the Creative Urban Projects programme of the 2013 Marseilles-Provence, European Capital of Culture.

REEVE SCHUMACHER & ANDRES DONADIO

A collaboration between Andres Donadio’s photographs and Reeve Schumacher’s sculptures.

RUSSIANS AND ROYALS

In this work by English photographer Thomas Stanworth, we discover four outstanding sites in the centre of Kabul. Devastated by war or simply abandoned, they have become the backdrops to a singular survival.

CARAVANE(S), LES CHIENS ABOIENT

This photographic exhibition around a caravan theme has a triple perspective to do with history, sociology and the work of memory. It endeavours to bring together photography professionals and amateurs.

Cultural events in the region

MOVING - NORMAN FOSTER ON ART

Norman Foster is the curator of an exhibition celebrating the Carré d’art’s twentieth anniversary. The museum’s premises will be filled with works by such historic artists as Alberto Giacometti and Alexander Calder, along with those by contemporary and emerging artists.

LES PAPESSES

Five women who left their mark on contemporary art are put in the spotlight in this exhibition: Camille Claudel, Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Jana Sterbach and Berlinde de Bruyckere.

DENISE COLOMB, ARTISTS’ PORTRAITS

2013 MARSEILLES-PROVENCE, EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE

Besides the leading international artistic and cultural encounters falling under its banner, Marseilles-Provence presents a profusion of lesser known initiatives, often instigated by associations and community groups. Visitors are invited to discover a ‘capital territory’: natural and urban sites, contemporary creations and art in public spaces, the diversity of traditions and ways of life of the region’s inhabitants...
