Vernacular collection of Eric Kessels

LOVING YOUR PICTURES

Loving Your Pictures discovers and exhibits the professional everyday photographer. It offers another look at different photographic series outside their original and intended purpose. This separation allows for viewers to add new meanings to the images with different considerations and perspectives.

Loving Your Pictures brings together different manifestations of what has been called “Vernacular Photography” or “Amateur Photography.” This area of image making is as endless as our need to record, document and preserve. Photography and its vernacular beauty occur in some ways as a type of ritual as in the story of a Spanish woman photographed consistently by her husband over the span of their many years together. Photographic wonder also results from failure, as in the snapshots that were rescued despite being deemed unsuccessful by their maker. It also comes to life in the realization that there are a multitude of strangers living in our photo albums. Loving Your Pictures finds delight in the work of these fellow citizens and their cameras and asks us to consider the countless photographic wonders that go on around us each day.

Exhibition presented with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in France and the Mondriaan Foundation, after his first installation at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, in 2006.
