The Rencontres d’Arles awards for 2007 have changed format and now comprise three sections:
The Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award
The Contemporary Book Award
The Historical Book Award
With the prize giving ceremony a feature of Festival Week, the Rencontres d'Arles Awards are open to all photographers and all artists making use of photography, whatever their methods and whatever the field they usually work in. Photography professionals in Arles for opening week are invited to choose a winner among the fifteen artists nominated. Prize money is 25,000 euros.
The Rencontres d'Arles Discovery Award will go to a photographer or an artist making use of photography whose work has recently been – or deserves to be – discovered on the international scene. Prize money for the award is 25,000 euros.
This award will include a “No Limit” honourable mention for a photographer or an artist making use of photography whose work takes photography beyond currently acknowledged boundaries.
From different countries and with backgrounds linked to photography, the five nominators invited to curate 15 exhibitions for the Discovery Award are:
Bice CURIGER – Switzerland, art historian, curator at the Kunsthaus Zurich
Alain FLEISCHER – France, Filmmaker, writer, artist and photographer, founder and director of Le Fresnoy
Johan SJÖSTRÖM – Sweden, curator at the BildMuseet in Umea, Sweden.
Thomas WESKI – Germany, Chief Curator of the Haus der Kunst, Munich.
Anne WILKES TUCKER – USA, Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
The Contemporary Book Award will go to the best contemporary photography work (book or catalogue) published between 1 June 2006 and 31 May 2007.
The Historical Book Award will go to the best historical photography book – thematic or monographic – published between 1 June 2006 and 31 May 2007.

A non-profit foundation, the Fondation LUMA supports independent artists and pioneers who conceive and execute projects in the sphere of art and images, publishing, documentaries and multimedia. The foundation also specialises in projects combining the environment, education, and culture in its broadest and most innovative sense, thus instituting fruitful dialogue between areas which do not always gel easily.
