Jamie Isaia

THE IN AND BETWEEN

Jamie Isaia’s self-portrait project The In and Between is a visual document of a suppressed psychological state amplifying the ritualistic internal battle of physical identity, emotional quarantine sexual repression and its resulting mutiny. The viewer is seduced by palette, formal compositions and the painterly quality of the images, inviting the moments of quiet inner clarity amidst these volatile perspectives to surface. The In and Between follows one faceless woman, identity erased by her own concealing gestures, strategically placed objects or deliberate framing. She is the visual narrator of these internalised predicaments. At times she conveys emotional bouts that are particularly ‘female’. More often she communicates psychological conflicts that are impossible to verbalise but are understood by both sexes through the visual language of atmosphere and motion. Once past the surface of the image the viewer experiences the distraught emotional war being masked in this deceptive softness. The audience is participating in these moments of madness and the intervening moments of lucidity with her.
