Mickael Ackerman

HALF LIFE.

The particular journeys of Half Life encompass New York, Havana, Berlin, Naples, Paris, Warsaw and Cracow among others, but Michael Ackerman has been on the path of erasing geographical and other distinctions for some time. It’s certainly evident in his earlier book, Fiction. Half Life continues the trajectory away from the constraints of reportage and the traditional documentary mode, but here the trip is even more personal and more unified. Documentary and fiction conspire with autobiography; all dissolve into hallucination.

Mickael Ackerman

Born in 1967 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Lives in Berlin, Germany.

Since his first exhibition in 1999, Michael Ackerman has created his artistic universe through a uniquely radical approach. His work on Varanasi, entitled End Time City, eschews exoticism, description and anecdote in order to investigate time and death with a freedom that allows him to switch between the panoramic—a method which he reinvents here—and squares and rectangles. In black and white, constantly taking risks, he explores impossible light and leads the eye to look against the grain to create lush and enigmatic visions. In the world through which he travels, Michael Ackerman seeks—and finds—the image of his own disquiet, doubt and anxiety.
